BACKGROUND;

To understand Odette, it must be noted that she exists at an intersection between outsider and privilege. She was born to a wealthy family of British nobility, and benefits from all that entails: private tutors and boarding schools, extensive ballet and piano lessons, being assigned a personal maid, and so-on. This gave her the luxury of pursuing her own personal interests, such as learning Japanese, or teaching herself how to sew.

But that doesn't mean her life was entirely comfortable, always feeling as though she were on the razor's edge of losing it all. Around the age of ten, her family had moved to San Antonio for her father to pursue a lucrative deal in the oil industry, becoming a tremulous period in her life. Her father was something of a negligent figure, often buried in his work, and leaving her in the care of her abusive mother. Her mother became obsessed with advancing Odette's talents in ballet, such to a point she would harshly restrict her diet throughout the performance seasons, and making her subsist on salads or powdered shakes and water, eventually leading Odette to spend numerous visits in and out of hospitals to treat her an eating disorder.

This extended to her mental health as a adolescent teenager, as she started to more deeply examine her sexuality. Knowing her mother's conservative views, she became antsy about exposing any aspect of her personal life. Briefly entering a same sex relationship with a girl named Cari, who helped her develop a better understanding of leftist politics, all the while perpetuating a lack of interest in relationships around her parents so they wouldn't examine any of her friendships as anything more intimate, and throwing herself into her ballet.

Fed up with the lack of progression in the relationship, Cari decided to part ways with Odette, leaving her to feel alone and confused about her place in the world. Soon after, she entered college as a freshman at the tender age of 19, allotting her a certain kind of freedom than she lacked prior. Eventually, this led to her dating a woman by the name of Esmeralda (diablerose), whom she met through through the patronage of her ballet company. Later, she would learn that Esme was on the run from the Camarilla, and in a move of desperation, offered to sire Odette as a Toreador, which she accepted.

Since being turned into a vampire, she'd been accepted into the Anarch domain of San Antonio, proper. Finding a found family of sorts between the ragtag members of her coterie. She adores Nate (effusing) and Miguel (unliveactionroleplay) as brothers. She looks up to Celeste (sparkofrage) as someone to learn from and aspire to be like, admiring her convictions and values. Travis is much like a warm uncle, happy to give her affection and advice. And Jess (malkintsugi), the latest addition to their coterie, is someone Odette took a fast liking to, entering a sort of polycule between her and Celeste.

Throughout the course of her chronicle, her coterie has been faced with many challenges-- the most penitent of which being an active turf war between the Anarchs and the Sabbat, as a means to take back the domain for themselves. Much of the time, this entailed getting into scuffles with the Las Kamacuras, a Sabbat pack headed by Nate's sire, Dolores (cainite) and her wife Val (valkavian).

Val and Odette in particular would develop an antagonistic relationship, perhaps moreso than anyone else from Lolo's pack. It wouldn't be long before Val would find Odette's signal account, where they would proceed to trade insults and jabs between one another, but would soon escalate into threats of violence. After a few months of this, Odette would finally block Val, as she began to use this as a tactic to trigger Odette's beast to cause masquerade violations.

This would all come to a head when the coterie saw an opportunity to thin their numbers. The first would come in the form of helping a girl by the name of Mari defect from Lolo's pack, having reached out to Odette about an incident where she'd been abused by Val, and they came up with a plot to evacuate her to Austin (another city within the Anarch's domain.) The second would come in the form of a plan to break into the pack's home, where Val and Odette came to blows. The fight would lead to Val's death, and Odette diablerizing the vampire in a fit of rage.

Of course, since gaining a tradcath vampire cultist inside of her head, Odette has gone through a number of changes. Her morals are somewhat looser than they'd otherwise be. Though she still largely respects humans, and would not prefer to not see them harmed, it's somewhat easier to rationalize some of the Anarchs dirty work.

The fighting culminated in a duel between the Baron of San Antonio (Sophronia) and a representative from the Sabbat by the name of Andromeda, who had aspirations to take over the domain. Andromeda was beheaded in the duel, while Sophronia was knocked into Torpor, resulting in the anarchs retaining control of the territory.

Green - For Odette, green is akin to the color of life. The grass underneath her feet, the colors of leaves on trees, the stems of flowers growing in the spring. To her, green is beautiful. But as a vampire, it's difficult for her to appreciate the sights of spring greenery in the same way she once did. For at nighttime, the colors become muted and are more difficult to see than in daylight. So she cherishes the color wheel of spring and commits it to memory, because she doesn't know when she'd be able to see the world in the same light again.

Dead - Well, Odette is dead, after all. No matter how much effort she puts in to maintaining her cute and youthful appearance. It can be unnerving to her at times, being reminded that she lacks a pulse, or doesn't need to breathe as she once did. That her inhumanity grows with each passing day, like a ticking clock. Even if she is stronger, faster, and could charm anyone she pleased with her supernatural allure, there is no reversing her decision to become a creature of the night. She will forever be an outsider to the living, whether she likes it or not.

Dance - Odette has a complicated relationship with dancing. At times, the mere act can be an escape from the world. Gliding across the floor in graceful movements that make her feel like a beautiful swan swimming against the lake. At other times, it can be a reminder of the life her mother wanted for her. A prison of sorts, like shackles connected to her ankles, of tireless days spent with her ballet troupe. Even her very name is a reference to a ballet. It's an inescapable, horrifying nightmare at times. Even if there are otherwise days she find pleasure in her craft.

Pride - Is pride a fault of a virtue? For Odette, this is a never ending question. She would often recall how her mother would parade her around like a little doll. A malleable clay for her to mold as she wished, and would often boast about her to her friends. Her mother's pride in Odette was something, she'd consider, could've almost killed her, as she learned how to maintain an eating disorder. But to contrast, Odette is learning how to take pride in herself. Not as an extension as her mother's ambitions, but as her own person. Her ability to adapt and persevere, to march on in spite of all the trauma. To Odette, pride is a double edged sword.

Sin - To Odette, the most pertinent sin is to her is the 'diablerie'. In vampire terminology, this means to consume the soul of another vampire into oneself, and often considered one of the greatest crimes in vampire society. Though Odette, herself, would be considered guilty of this, the context in which she daiblerized Val was while her domain was at war with the Sabbat, and the Baron of San Antonio saw little issue with her doing so. This is not to say Odette hasn't come to regret the act, however. Odette shares her brainspace with Val, can see her memories, and even has to fight to keep her influence at bay. Considering Val is more brazen and violent than Odette, this has become something of a problem whenever Odette is threatened or provoked, and even whenever she needs to feed. Odette is rather pacifistic and prefers deescalation to fighting, whereas Val would be happy to kill her enemies or drain a mortal dry. It's always a push/pull with Val, to which Odette is constantly having to self-police.

Flower - Odette belongs to the clan Toreador, often referred to as "Clan of the Rose." They have a penchant for embracing those who are beautiful or skilled at some sort of art, and Odette happened to tick both those boxes. She's always been quite tall for a girl, with long hair and glittering green eyes. She's often been told that her ability in ballet feels nearly effortless, like a rose in bloom. Gorgeous, but fragile. Additionally, she is quite skilled in sewing (particularly, lolita fashion) and painting. Of course, now that she's a vampire, Odette no longer has to worry about the fragility of her beauty, being completely accepted by those among the 'rose garden.'

Cow - This is such a loaded term for Odette. 'Kine' is frequently used among other vampires to refer to humans, to the point it causes her to physically recoil, much like a sour feeling in her gut. She detests hearing it used, and often is forced to hold her temper. She's of the mind that, even as a vampire, your brain doesn't change overnight. That all vampires were humans once, and that they deserve more respect than to be treated as tools and food. She has asked those in her coterie that if she starts using the term, that she'd prefer to be killed at the hands of a friend, than to become a completely inhuman monster. And of course, they would expect the same of her.

What interests you most about playing this character in this game?
I feel like Odette would get a lot of mileage out of the mission style element of the game! Since a large chunk of the VtM tabletop game is running errands for various NPCs, it's a concept she'd be largely familiar with and wouldn't have any qualms adjusting to.

How do you see your character adjusting to/approaching the game world?
Odie's biggest hurdles in the game are going to be this: being separated from her coterie, and being depowered at the beginning. The first is going to hurt quite a bit! Her coterie is basically her first real family, given her troubled relationship with her parents. But she is quite the social butterfly, and shouldn't have any issues making friends! The second would be a bit of a disorienting feeling for her! Vampirism is the first time she's really had any autonomy in her life, and was a conscious choice on her part. However, she's quite willful, and would adjust to chasing after her dream (being a real life magical girl!) and would find a lot of security in pursuing the magic path.

What do you see your character finding most interesting about the setting/game premise?
The first, is that this world would be something of a second chance for her! As that she often finds the politics of vampire society to be quite frustrating (in particular, operating on the rule of 'not getting caught' for vampire activity). Since the Masquerade no longer applies, she'll try to be open about her vampirism for the most part, and not have to deal with the same restraints (such as being able to feed without having to be discreet.) The second, as mentioned above, would be the magic of Medeas. Odette has always been fascinated with magical girl anime, so being able to learn and harness its power for herself would be dream come true for her.
